Substance Use

Are You Struggling with a Substance Use Issue?

Addiction is any behavior or substance use that becomes compulsive and interferes with everyday responsibilities.

Do you or someone you know experience any of the following:

  • Craving or a strong desire to use drugs or alcohol

  • Difficulty cutting down or quitting completely

  • Withdrawal from social and recreational activities

  • Taking risks, such as sexual risks or driving under the influence

  • Spending a lot of time to get, use, and recover from the effects of using the substance

  • Tolerance to or need for increased amounts of the substance to get an effect

  • Withdrawal symptoms that happen if you decrease or stop using the drug

  • Continued use of the drug even though you are aware of the physical, psychological, and family/social problems that are caused by ongoing substance use

Substance abuse and dependence are caused by multiple factors, including genetic vulnerability, environmental stressors, social pressures, individual personality characteristics, and psychiatric problems. We can help you in the journey to recovery. There are some people that benefit from an inpatient level of treatment, then moving to an outpatient level. We can help coordinate finding the best possible treatment for you as an individual and provide support throughout your journey.

Getting Support for Substance Use

Depending on your level of use, we may be suited to support you in your recovery. See where you fall inside of these parameters:

Substance abuse describes the harmful or hazardous use of substances. It is characterized by a pattern of use that leads to significant impairment or distress, such as problems at work, school, or in relationships.

We are able to work with clients who feel that their substance use is having a detrimental effect on their lives, but who are not in a state of active dependence.

Substance dependence is a condition characterized by a strong desire or need to use a substance, despite harmful consequences. It is often accompanied by increased tolerance and withdrawal symptoms when the substance is not used.

Substance dependence requires in-patient care to ensure bodily safety as withdrawal can lead to psychological and physiological distress as well as dangerous medical consequences. If you are in this category, please ask us for a referral to in-patient care.
